Political Crisis in Oaxaca: Environmental Commission and Pressure on MC

Political Crisis in Oaxaca: Environmental Commission and Pressure on MC

The government of Oaxaca has created the Metropolitan Environmental Commission and the Air Quality Agency, which excludes the executive branch from financial and human resources. This is part of the discontent of the leadership of the Green Party, led by Edgar Salvatierra, which began when the party was not included in the public positioning against the Citizen Movement (MC). By not activating these provisions, members of the MORENA party, who claim to be close to national leadership, believe this goes against the intention of Luisa María Alcalde to pressure MC. To understand, the Environmental Commission has "frozen" projects, such as a request to the Secretary of the Environment to justify the cancellation of environmental alerts despite the negative air quality. It has also requested reports from Water and Drainage regarding the crisis of sewer overflows in various sectors of the metropolitan area. After the Environmental Commission went almost 12 months without holding sessions in the local congress, a sector of MORENA in the state considers this a gesture from the Green Party to MC, as it supports projects that are contrary to the Palace of Cantera. This working group in the legislature is chaired by the only local deputy from the Green Party, Claudia Chapa Marmolejo. A similar situation is occurring in the Labor Party (PT). The backlog has intensified after the differences at the national level between MORENA and the Green Party regarding the electoral reform and Claudia Sheinbaum's 'Plan B', mainly due to the clashes between the two allied parties with Alcalde Luján. Currently, the commission has only held three sessions in the last year and a half and has accumulated about 126 pending projects that have been dragging on since the previous legislative session. According to LPO, the next MORENA delegate in the state, Alejandro Murat, believes that the intention of the Palace of Cantera is to fragment the electoral offer for the 2027 elections, so that most parties in the state work separately and MC remains the party with the highest voting intention.
